C2 - Given that the immune system appears not to be understood, how was it possible to develop drugs to help people with transplants? Or perhaps 'drugs' is something of a misnomer; maybe it was largely a hit-and-miss process. At any rate it seems surprising that it proved possible at all.

The development of immunosuppressive drugs as indeed been "hit and miss". They are largely non-specific and highly poisonous with significant side effects; however with the many drugs available transplantation has become remarkably effective!

C3 - Hello, My name is Angela and my son Adam now 13 months was born with Bilairy Atresia. Due to late diagnosis he didn't get his Kasai until 12 weeks old, but by some miracle he is doing really well, bilirubin, albumin and coagulation levels all normal. My question is about Living related Liver donation. When my son needs a transplant I feel that this is the best option, Adam does not need to get sicker waiting for a donor. In some hospitals in America these are done routinely, what way does it work here in UK?

C6 - BODY Officers have responded to the BMA proposal to change to a Law of 'Presumed Consent Opt Out. This is on the BODY Homepage

6R1 - I fully agree with the BODY statement on the BMA's proposals to change the law. It won't work! Also its not the solution. The donors are there but facilities in ICUs are insufficient to allow retrieval of organs. We need to debate soluble issues in transplant donation and not get sidetracked into fantasy!

C7 - I would like to register as an orgon donor, but I have no living relatives that I am aware of. Can I write 'None' or 'Not Known' under next of kin, and still be registered as a donor? In the event of my death, could the organs still be used even though there would be no family to consult?
